EUPHRATES RIVER : SYRIA

Rivers worldwide are undergoing unprecedented changes due to climate change, industrialisation, population growth, conflict and migration. These transformations have deep implications for biodiversity, economic stability, water security and cultural heritage. However, data outlining these shifts often remains hidden in technical studies and complex datasets, creating a divide between scientific understanding and public knowledge.

Arteries.blue is dedicated to bridging this gap through data-driven storytelling. By combining interactive data, graphics, animations, articles from researchers and photostories from local journalists, it decodes complex information and presents it in an engaging, accessible format. Arteries.blue aims to convey river-related narratives to both specialised and general audiences, with a design that echoes the attire and resilience of Syrian women.

This edition of Arteries.blue sails along the Euphrates River in Syria, a river which is entwined in ancient history and contemporary challenges. It highlights previously untold stories from the river, sharing the voices and experiences of those who interact with its waters. Arteries.blue thus transforms the perception of the Euphrates from a mere physical entity into a dynamic symbol of cultural and environmental importance.

By emphasising the unique context of the Euphrates, Arteries.blue deepens understanding and awareness of the river. Its ultimate goal is to use accessible science communication, infused with cultural motifs, for more informed, inclusive decision-making processes, influencing the future of rivers worldwide.
